Description

The spruce cone gall midge (Kaltenbachiola rachiphaga) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This species is highly specific to spruce trees, where it primarily affects the development of cones and seeds.

The primary host for this pest is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). The infestation occurs when the female midges lay eggs on young, developing cones. The larvae, upon hatching, bore into the cone scales and the central axis to feed on the developing seed tissues.

The biological cycle is strictly synchronized with the flowering time of spruce trees. The adults emerge in spring to mate and oviposit. The larvae remain inside the cone, creating internal galls, which provide protection and nutrients. They typically overwinter inside the cones or in the soil after the cones have fallen.
