Keratella
Keratella
Description
Keratella is a genus of microscopic organisms belonging to the phylum Rotifera. While typically recognized as a component of freshwater plankton, in agronomic practices—particularly in hydroponics and aquaponics—these organisms can act as pests by disrupting nutrient solution dynamics and clogging irrigation equipment.
Taxonomically, they are classified within the order Ploima and the family Brachionidae. Keratella species are known for their distinct lorica (a rigid outer shell) equipped with spines, which allow them to remain buoyant and active in the nutrient-rich water environments used in modern indoor farming systems.
The primary damage caused by Keratella occurs in closed-loop irrigation systems. Rapid population growth leads to water turbidity and the accumulation of biological debris, which clogs emitters and pipes. Furthermore, their metabolic activities and subsequent decomposition create an environment conducive to the proliferation of root-pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
The biology of these organisms is defined by an rapid asexual reproductive cycle (parthenogenesis). In optimal environmental conditions, populations can surge in a very short time. This uncontrolled biomass increase depletes the oxygen levels in the solution and disrupts the nutrient uptake efficiency of the plant roots, leading to physiological stress in the crops.
Management and control strategies center on water sanitation. Essential measures include the installation of UV-C sterilizers in the circulation system, fine mesh filtration to remove suspended organic matter, and routine maintenance/disinfection of all nutrient reservoirs. Maintaining precise pH and temperature parameters helps in keeping the population levels below the threshold of economic concern.
- Implementation of UV-C sterilization for nutrient solutions.
- Regular cleaning of filtration and irrigation pipes.
- Strict water quality management and monitoring.
- Periodic system flushing and chemical decontamination.
