Description

Systematic position. Labidura is a genus of insects belonging to the order Dermaptera (earwigs) and the family Labiduridae. The most common species is the shore earwig, Labidura riparia. They are characterized by their elongated bodies and prominent cerci (forceps-like structures) at the end of the abdomen, which they use for defense and prey capture.

Crops affected. Labidura is considered a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant and organic matter. It poses a threat to many vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, and cabbage, as well as field crops like cereals. In gardens, they are frequently found causing damage to soft fruits and seedlings that are in contact with the soil.

Biology and life cycle. These insects undergo incomplete metamorphosis (hemimetabolism). The female lays eggs in specialized chambers in the soil and provides parental care, which is a rare behavior among insects. Nymphs resemble miniature adults but lack wings. Depending on environmental temperature and humidity, they can complete one or more life cycles within a single growing season.

Damage and harm caused. Labidura is primarily nocturnal, seeking shelter in moist, dark places during the day. They cause significant damage by chewing holes in leaves, consuming young sprouts, and damaging fruits, which significantly reduces the quality and market value of the crop. Open wounds on plants caused by their feeding often become entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal infections.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Labidura populations. Cultural practices such as removing garden debris, weeds, and mulch piles where they hide are highly effective. Using traps (such as damp paper or rolled cardboard) can help monitor and reduce numbers. In cases of severe infestations, targeted chemical control using approved insecticides may be necessary.
