Description

The bright-line brown-eye moth (Lacanobia oleracea) is a member of the Noctuidae family within the Lepidoptera order. This species is a notorious polyphagous pest that causes significant economic damage to both greenhouse and field-grown horticultural crops across temperate regions.

The moth targets a vast range of plant species, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, and brassicas. Due to its wide host range, it can survive and proliferate in various environments, moving between different crop types and weeds depending on the season, which makes it a persistent threat to agricultural production.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal, laying clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves. Larval development is temperature-dependent, usually involving five or six instars. The species overwinters in the pupal stage, buried in the soil, which acts as a protective niche against winter frost and predators.

Damage is caused primarily by the larvae. Young caterpillars skeletonize the leaves, while later instars consume large areas of leaf tissue, often leaving behind only the main veins. Furthermore, the larvae can tunnel into fruits such as tomatoes, rendering them unmarketable due to internal damage, excrement deposits, and the subsequent development of soft rot diseases.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as soil cultivation to expose pupae to birds and climate, are essential. Monitoring with pheromone traps helps determine the optimal timing for intervention. When thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis or selective chemical agents are employed to suppress larval populations.
