Description
The Pale-shouldered Brocade (Lacanobia thalassina) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a well-known species distributed across Europe and parts of Asia. As a polyphagous insect, it utilizes various host plants for larval development, posing a recurrent, though often localized, threat to domestic gardens and field crops.
The larvae are known to feed on a wide range of vegetation. Agricultural crops including peas, beans, potatoes, and sugar beets are frequent targets. Furthermore, the pest can be found on various woody plants and herbaceous perennials, making it a generalist feeder that can survive in diverse ecological niches surrounding agricultural fields.
The life cycle follows a standard pattern for Noctuids: eggs are laid on the underside of leaves, followed by larval growth, pupation in the soil, and emergence as adults. Typically, the species overwinters in the pupal stage buried in the ground. Depending on the latitude, there can be one or two generations per year, with adult moths being nocturnal.
Damage is characterized by leaf consumption. Young larvae typically create small holes or "windows" in the leaf tissue, while older larvae consume larger portions of the leaf blade. In cases of high population density, significant defoliation can occur, which weakens the plant, hinders photosynthesis, and negatively impacts the total yield of vegetables and leguminous plants.
