Lachesilla is a genus of small insects within the order Psocoptera, belonging to the family Lachesillidae. Commonly referred to as a type of booklouse, these insects are frequently found in agricultural storage facilities, residential pantries, and environments where organic matter is kept in dry conditions. While they are sometimes considered harmless in small numbers, large infestations pose a significant risk to stored goods.

This pest primarily attacks dry plant debris, stored grains, cereals, flour, and botanical collections. The presence of Lachesilla is intrinsically linked to the growth of mold and fungi, which serve as their primary food source. By feeding on these microorganisms, they contaminate stored products with feces and shed exoskeletons, which can lead to significant reductions in product quality and hygiene standards.

The life cycle of Lachesilla consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. They thrive in environments with high relative humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Their high reproductive capacity allows them to colonize new areas rapidly if conditions are favorable. Because they are minute and cryptic, they can easily remain undetected until their population reaches levels that cause visible damage to the substrates they inhabit.

The economic impact of Lachesilla involves not only the direct consumption of organic material but also the degradation of stored stock quality. In industrial settings, their presence can trigger the growth of more harmful pests or aggravate existing fungal contamination. The damage is characterized by a dusty, granular appearance of the affected goods and the presence of fine webbing that mats the surface of the stored product.
