Lachnus

Systematic position. Lachnus is a genus of aphids belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. These insects are highly adapted specialists that feed on woody plants, particularly focusing on conifers, which makes them significant pests in both forestry and landscape horticulture.

Crops damaged. The primary hosts for Lachnus are coniferous trees, including species of spruce (Picea), pine (Pinus), and fir (Abies). They are commonly found on young trees, ornamental landscapes, and commercial plantations, where their feeding activity can cause visible declines in tree vigor.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs attached to the bark or needles. In spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding, quickly establishing dense colonies. Throughout the growing season, multiple generations are produced, including winged forms that facilitate the migration of the population to healthy trees in the vicinity.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. By piercing plant tissues with their stylets, these aphids extract essential fluids. This leads to needle discoloration, premature needle drop, and stunted shoot growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage and severely inhibits the tree's photosynthetic capacity, weakening the host over time.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach. Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization is the first line of defense. When infestation levels are high, systemic insecticides are applied to eliminate the pest population effectively. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, is also a crucial long-term strategy.
