The larch aphid, scientifically identified as Lachnus laricifex, belongs to the family Aphididae. It is a specific pest that targets larch trees (Larix spp.). These insects are specialized sap-feeders that can cause significant stress to trees within their range, particularly in plantations and urban landscapes.
The biological cycle of this species is intricate, characterized by egg overwintering in bark crevices and the subsequent emergence of fundatrices in early spring. As the season progresses, the population density increases exponentially through several generations of wingless and winged individuals, peaking during the warmest summer months before shifting to the production of sexual forms for autumn egg-laying.
Damage occurs primarily through the extraction of phloem sap from needles and young twigs. Infested needles often exhibit chlorosis, curling, and premature abscission. If the infestation is severe and prolonged, the tree suffers from significant growth reduction, canopy thinning, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors like wood-boring beetles or environmental drought.

This sticky substance serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, which appear as black, powdery patches. The combination of nutrient loss and photosynthetic inhibition caused by the mold creates a debilitating environment for the host tree, while the presence of ants, which attend to the aphids for their honeydew, often prevents biological control agents from effectively curbing the infestation.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Lachnus laricifex relies on a combination of cultural and chemical tactics. Monitoring for the first signs of infestation is crucial, especially in young stands. When economic thresholds are met, the application of systemic insecticides can mitigate the spread.
