Oregon conifer aphid

The Oregon conifer aphid (Lachnus oregonensis) is a specialized insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is recognized as a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly affecting various species of spruce and pine, where it resides on branches and needles to feed on plant sap.

The biology and development of Lachnus oregonensis are closely linked to the physiological cycles of its host plants. Overwintering occurs primarily at the egg stage on the foliage. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately. They rapidly develop into adults, producing multiple overlapping generations during the growing season.

The damage caused by this aphid is primarily observed through the discoloration and wilting of new growth. As the insects extract fluids from the needles, the plant experiences nutritional stress, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the premature drop of needles which disfigures the tree's canopy.

A critical issue associated with this pest is the production of honeydew, a sugary byproduct of their feeding. This substance coats the needles and promotes the growth of sooty mold, which effectively blocks sunlight from reaching the needle surface, thereby impairing the tree's ability to photosynthesize and significantly weakening its defense mechanisms.

For larger landscape trees, systematic soil treatments or foliage sprays are often necessary to prevent long-term structural damage to the host conifers.
