Pandanus mealybug

Taxonomic position: The Pandanus mealybug (Laminicoccus pandani) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a specialized pest primarily affecting tropical and subtropical ornamental plants, particularly those kept in indoor environments or greenhouses where natural predators are absent.

Host plants: The primary host is the Pandanus genus. However, this pest can also infest other ornamental species, including various types of palms and tropical foliage plants. Its ability to hide in leaf axils makes it a difficult pest to manage in professional nurseries and home collections.

Biology and life cycle: Laminicoccus pandani undergoes a cycle involving egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females are sedentary and typically covered with a white waxy secretion that provides protection against desiccants and some contact insecticides. The nymphs, or crawlers, are the primary dispersal stage, moving actively across the plant to locate suitable feeding sites.

Damage symptoms: The pests feed by inserting their stylets into the plant tissue and sucking sap. This causes leaf yellowing, stunting, and deformation. A major indicator of infestation is the appearance of white, cotton-like masses in leaf folds. Additionally, the accumulation of honeydew often leads to the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and damages the plant's aesthetic value.

Control measures: Effective management relies on a combination of cultural practices and chemical intervention. Early detection is critical; plants should be inspected frequently. Systemic insecticides are highly effective as they reach the pest through the plant's vascular system. In smaller infestations, physical removal combined with alcohol-based cleaning of the foliage can be successful.

• Quarantine new plants for at least two weeks.
• Physical removal using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.
• Application of systemic insecticides (e.g., imidacloprid).
• Increasing airflow to reduce humidity around the plant base.
