Description

Lamprotettix (specifically Lamprotettix nitidulus) is a member of the Hemiptera order, family Cicadellidae. It is recognized in agronomy primarily as a dangerous vector of phytoplasma diseases in perennial crops, most notably grapevine yellows (Flavescence dorée). This leafhopper species is a significant concern for viticulturists worldwide due to its ability to spread debilitating plant pathogens.

The biology of Lamprotettix nitidulus involves a complex life cycle consisting of eggs, nymphs (multiple instars), and adults. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, typically embedded within the bark or leaf tissues of host plants. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding on plant sap, simultaneously acquiring and transmitting the phytoplasmas responsible for plant decline.

The primary damage caused by this pest is systemic. By feeding on the phloem of the vine, the insect introduces phytoplasmas that disrupt the plant's vascular system. Symptoms often include leaf chlorosis, downward curling of leaf margins, inhibition of shoot growth, and necrosis of berries. Infected plants fail to produce viable fruit and eventually suffer from severe physiological decline.

In terms of economic impact, the presence of Lamprotettix can lead to total loss of vineyard blocks if not managed early. Because the phytoplasma infection is systemic, mechanical pruning of symptomatic parts is often insufficient, and the entire plant may eventually need to be removed to prevent further spread of the disease within the orchard or vineyard.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. This includes regular field scouting using yellow sticky traps to detect adult activity, weed control in and around the orchard to remove alternative hosts, and the strategic application of systemic insecticides during the nymphal development stages. Maintaining clean, vigorous plant stock is essential to building resilience against the transmission of pathogens.
