Description
The shiny leafhopper (Lamprotettix nitidulus) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest in many temperate regions, where it frequently attacks a wide array of cultivated plants, including vegetables, root crops, and ornamental shrubs.
This pest is highly adaptable and feeds on various crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, and multiple brassica species. By piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap, the leafhopper inflicts physiological stress on the plant, which is further exacerbated by its role as a vector for various plant viruses and mycoplasma-like organisms.
The biological cycle of the shiny leafhopper typically involves egg-laying within plant stems or leaves during late summer and autumn. The eggs serve as the primary overwintering stage. Upon hatching in the spring, the nymphs begin feeding immediately, going through five developmental instars before reaching the adult stage.
The damage caused by Lamprotettix nitidulus manifests as chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted growth. The most severe impact, however, is the transmission of systemic diseases, such as stolbur. If left uncontrolled, these infections can lead to significant reductions in harvest quality and total yield failure in susceptible fields.
