Description
The genus Lasiommata belongs to the family Nymphalidae and the order Lepidoptera. Commonly known as wall butterflies, these insects are frequent inhabitants of meadows, woodland borders, and agricultural field margins. While often viewed as benign, their larval stages can act as pests on various grass species and cereal crops.
These pests primarily target grasses (Poaceae) and forage crops. The larvae feed on the foliage, consuming leaves and causing significant defoliation. This feeding activity reduces the plant's surface area for photosynthesis, which is critical for the development and biomass accumulation of the crops, especially during early growth stages.
The biological cycle of Lasiommata typically involves overwintering as larvae within plant debris or near the base of the stems. In the spring, they resume feeding, pupate, and emerge as adults. Depending on the geographical region and local climate, they may complete one or more generations per year, synchronized with the lush growth of their host plants.
Damage caused by these larvae is characterized by ragged leaf margins and, in severe infestations, total stripping of the leaf blades. The resulting loss of leaf area weakens the host plants, making them more susceptible to subsequent stressors such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or secondary fungal pathogen infections, leading to reduced forage quality.
