Lasioptera fructuaria belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges). This insect is known for its larvae feeding within the fruit tissues, often causing significant disruption to the development of the host plant's reproductive organs.

This pest typically targets a variety of fruit-bearing crops and berries. The presence of the larvae within the fruit disturbs the plant's natural ripening process, often leading to structural deformation, tissue discoloration, and the premature shedding of the crop.
