The Grape gall midge (scientific name: Lasioptera vitis) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a specific pest of grapevines, distinguished by its ability to induce abnormal tissue growth known as galls on the host plant.
The primary hosts for this pest are grapevines (Vitis species). The insects specifically target succulent tissues, including young shoots, leaf petioles, and tendrils, where the larvae feed and stimulate the plant to produce protective gall structures.
The life cycle begins with the emergence of adult midges in the spring. Females deposit eggs into the epidermis of growing vines. As the larvae hatch and start feeding, they release chemicals that cause the plant cells to proliferate, forming characteristic, often reddish or swollen galls. The larvae remain protected within these structures throughout their development.
The damage caused by Lasioptera vitis is primarily localized to the shoots. The presence of galls interferes with nutrient translocation and water flow, which can lead to stunted shoot growth, structural weakness, and a general reduction in vine vigor. In severe infestations, the yield potential and wood maturation of the vine are compromised.
Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Key measures include:
- Strict sanitation: pruning and destroying infested shoots before the larvae emerge.
- Early season monitoring for adult activity.
