Lepeophtheirus is a genus of parasitic copepods within the family Caligidae. While not a plant pest, it is a significant concern for global aquaculture, particularly in salmon farming. These organisms, often referred to as sea lice, act as ectoparasites, causing substantial health challenges for fish populations in sea cages.
The genus falls under the order Siphonostomatoida. The lifecycle is complex, progressing through several planktonic larval stages before reaching the infective copepodid stage. Upon finding a host, the parasite matures through several chalimus stages while attached to the fish, ultimately becoming a highly mobile adult capable of moving across the host's surface.
The primary damage caused by these parasites involves severe skin erosion. By feeding on host mucus, epidermis, and blood, Lepeophtheirus creates open lesions.
