Description
Systematic position. The pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) belongs to the order Perciformes and the family Centrarchidae. Originating from North America, this invasive species has successfully established itself in various freshwater ecosystems across Europe, posing a significant threat to indigenous fish populations and aquatic biodiversity.
Affected sectors. While the pumpkinseed is not a pest of agricultural crops, it causes substantial economic damage to the aquaculture industry. It aggressively predates on the fry of commercially valuable fish species, such as carp and tench, and consumes their eggs, leading to a drastic decline in the productivity of hatcheries and fish farms.
Biology and life cycle. This species is characterized by high ecological plasticity. Spawning occurs during the spring and summer when water temperatures exceed 18°C. Males construct nests in the substrate and provide intensive parental care by guarding the eggs. Early sexual maturity and high fecundity enable the population to expand rapidly in new environments.
Nature of damage and pest status. The damage is primarily driven by food competition and direct predation. As an aggressive and opportunistic feeder, the pumpkinseed displaces native fish species by occupying their ecological niches. In managed pond systems, it decimates larvae of commercially farmed fish, severely hindering the operational efficiency of aquaculture facilities.
Control measures. Controlling this invasive species is challenging and requires integrated management. Key strategies include:
- Complete draining and disinfection of ponds at the end of the production cycle.
- Installation of fish-exclusion screens at water intakes.
- Biological control by introducing native predatory fish like pike or zander.
- Systematic removal using selective fishing gear to reduce population density.
