Description

The Eucalyptus gall wasp (Leptocybe invasa) is a small hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Eulophidae. Originally native to regions with eucalyptus, it has become a global invasive pest, significantly affecting the production of eucalyptus wood and essential oils in plantations worldwide.

The host range is limited to various species of the genus Eucalyptus. The female wasp inserts its ovipositor into the midribs of leaves and the stems of young shoots to deposit eggs. This activity triggers the formation of characteristic woody galls, which serve as a protective environment and food source for the developing larvae.

The life cycle of the gall wasp is rapid under favorable temperatures. Adults are small, shiny wasps, and reproduction occurs via thelytokous parthenogenesis, meaning only females are produced. Depending on the environment, the development from egg to adult takes several months, allowing for overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

In terms of damage, the insect is highly destructive. The galls cause significant distortion of the foliage and young branches, leading to leaf drop, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of young trees. The physiological stress caused by the wasp prevents the trees from reaching their full growth potential, causing major economic losses in the forestry industry.

Management of Leptocybe invasa is challenging, but biological control has shown the most promise. Releasing parasitoid wasps, such as Quadrastichus mendeli or Selitrichodes neseri, has proven effective in many countries in reducing wasp populations to manageable levels. Chemical control is generally restricted to nurseries due to the difficulty of treating large-scale forest stands.
