Taxonomically, Leptomastix belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Encyrtidae. These tiny wasps have evolved to be highly specialized in locating host insects. Their biological niche is strictly defined by their interaction with the citrus mealybug, making them an essential tool in integrated pest management programs.
These parasitoids protect a wide range of crops, including citrus fruits, ornamental flowers, vines, and various vegetables grown in greenhouse conditions. The larval stage of the wasp develops inside the mealybug, eventually killing it and transforming it into a hard "mummy."
