Description

The meadow plant bug (Leptopterna dolabrata) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. As a significant agricultural pest, it primarily inhabits grassland habitats and cereal crops, causing extensive damage to plants by feeding on their sap and developing reproductive tissues.

This insect specifically targets grass crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats, as well as various wild grasses. The pest's ability to adapt to different host plants makes it a recurring threat in agricultural landscapes where cereals and fodder grasses are grown in close proximity.

The life cycle consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The species is univoltine, meaning it produces only one generation per year. Eggs are typically laid inside the stems of host plants in the summer, where they remain dormant throughout the winter until hatching in the following spring.

Damage caused by Leptopterna dolabrata is twofold: mechanical injury from piercing-sucking mouthparts and the injection of digestive enzymes. This feeding behavior leads to yellowing of the foliage, stem weakness, and poor grain filling. Severe infestations can result in "white ears" or entirely barren heads, significantly impacting total yield.
