Systematic position. The black-horned fly (Leucopis nigricornis) belongs to the order Diptera, family Chamaemyiidae. While many species within this family are beneficial predators of aphids and scale insects, Leucopis nigricornis is recognized in agricultural studies for its ability to impact cereal crops, classifying it as a potential pest of agronomic significance.

Crops affected. The primary targets for this pest are various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye. The larvae concentrate on the vegetative tissues, specifically within the stem bases or leaf sheaths, which allows them to feed undisturbed by external environmental factors, often leading to hidden infestations.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adults emerge during the spring, aligning their activity with the early growth stages of cereals. Oviposition usually occurs in protected areas of the plant, ensuring that the emerging larvae have immediate access to a food source. The larval development period typically lasts several weeks before pupation occurs within the plant tissue or near the soil surface.

Damage and pest status. The damage caused by these larvae is primarily related to the loss of plant vigor. By feeding on internal tissues, they disrupt nutrient and water transport, causing yellowing of leaves, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the central shoot. Infested plants may struggle to head properly, resulting in reduced grain weight and overall quality decline.

Control measures. Effective management of this pest requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as deep tillage after harvest and proper crop rotation, are essential to break the life cycle. When monitoring indicates an infestation exceeding the economic threshold, the application of systemic insecticides is necessary to reach the larvae located inside the plant tissue.
