Description

Systematic position. The insect Leucopis pemphigae belongs to the order Diptera, family Chamaemyiidae. While many members of this family are recognized as beneficial predators of aphids and scale insects, Leucopis pemphigae is specifically known for its association with gall-forming aphids, where its larvae develop within or near the structures created by the aphids.

Crops damaged. This pest primarily infests woody plants, most notably species of poplar (Populus) and elm (Ulmus). It is particularly problematic in stands where gall-forming aphids (family Pemphigidae) are present, as the fly utilizes these galls as a breeding site and a source of nutrition, further stressing the host plant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Leucopis pemphigae is synchronized with the development of its host plant and the associated gall-inducing aphids. Adults emerge and lay eggs in or near the aphid-induced galls. The larvae hatch and feed within these protected environments. The insect typically undergoes several generations per year, with pupation occurring in protected areas such as bark crevices or dry galls.
