Limacoccus

Limacoccus is a genus of insects belonging to the suborder Coccoidea and the family Eriococcidae. These insects are closely related to mealybugs and scale insects. Their morphology is adapted to a sedentary lifestyle, allowing them to parasitize woody plants effectively by piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap.

This pest primarily affects trees and shrubs. In agricultural practice, infestations are often found on fruit-bearing crops, ornamental trees, and forest species. The insects prefer to colonize stems, branches, and leaf axils, where they find stable conditions for feeding and protection from environmental factors.

The biology of the species is synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. They typically overwinter as young nymphs or mated females, sheltering within bark crevices or under protective waxy secretions. In the spring, they resume feeding, followed by the development of males into pupae, while females remain stationary to continue feeding and producing eggs within a protective ovisac.

The primary damage is caused by the depletion of the plant due to the massive withdrawal of sap. Infested parts are often covered by honeydew, a sticky excretion that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This leads to impaired photosynthesis, premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in the plant's winter hardiness and overall yield potential.

Control measures require an integrated approach combining cultural and chemical strategies:

• Manual removal of heavily infested branches and scraping off loose, old bark.
• Application of horticultural mineral oils in early spring to target overwintering stages.
• Use of systemic insecticides during the active crawler emergence period.
• Maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization and watering to improve natural defenses.
