Description
Lorquin's admiral (Limenitis lorquini) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly species is primarily distributed in western North America. Although it is more often considered an entomological subject, the larvae can cause damage to foliage in gardens and woodlands by feeding primarily on the leaves of trees and shrubs.
This pest prefers plants from the Salicaceae and Rosaceae families. In an agronomic context, it poses the greatest threat to willow, poplar, cherry, bird cherry, and other fruit-bearing stone fruit crops. The caterpillars actively feed on the leaf blade, which, in high densities, can lead to partial defoliation of trees and a decline in their overall vigor.
The life cycle of Limenitis lorquini includes the typical stages for this family: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the tips of host plant leaves. The larvae overwinter at early developmental stages by constructing special shelters from rolled leaves bound with silk, which allows them to successfully survive adverse conditions until spring.
The damage is characterized by skeletonizing or complete defoliation of leaves, starting from the edges. Mature caterpillars have a distinct protective coloration, which helps them camouflage as bird droppings or damaged leaf tissue. The harm is considered moderate, but during mass outbreaks, the pest can stunt the growth of young seedlings and reduce the yield of fruit trees.
For effective orchard protection, the following measures are recommended:
- Regular monitoring of tree canopy conditions during the spring period.
- Manual collection and destruction of nests containing overwintered larvae.
- Application of biological insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis upon reaching the economic threshold of damage.
- Maintaining tree health through proper pruning and adequate irrigation practices.
