Nysius bug

Systematic position. The Nysius bug (Liorhyssus hyalinus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Rhopalidae. It is a cosmopolitan species widely recognized in agricultural entomology for its ability to thrive in various climates, making it a persistent pest in many cropping systems worldwide.

Crops affected. This pest is a polyphagous insect with a broad range of host plants. It is particularly noted for causing damage to cotton, legumes, cereals, sunflower, and a variety of wild weeds. In cases of massive outbreaks, it can cause severe economic losses in both industrial field crops and horticultural vegetable gardens.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Liorhyssus hyalinus is heavily influenced by temperature and moisture levels. The species can complete several generations per year. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing plant tissues with their mouthparts and sucking sap. Hibernation occurs mainly in the adult stage within plant debris, soil crevices, or under dense weed cover during the winter months.

Nature of damage. The feeding activity of these bugs leads to plant stress, retarded growth, and significant deformation of leaves. When they feed on flowers and young fruits, it often results in the abscission of buds and reduced yield quality. Furthermore, the punctures serve as entry points for various pathogens, potentially triggering secondary disease outbreaks in the damaged crop.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include:

• rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative food sources;
• post-harvest tillage to destroy overwintering sites;
• application of insecticides strictly when economic thresholds are reached;
• implementation of crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle and maintain field hygiene.
