Systematic position: The turnip aphid (Latin: Lipaphis erysimi) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest that exclusively targets host plants within the Brassicaceae family, making it a major threat to commercial mustard, cabbage, and canola production.

Host crops: This pest attacks a wide range of crops, including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, turnip, radish, and oilseed rape. It is also frequently found on wild mustard and other cruciferous weeds, which serve as a reservoir for the pest population throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits a complex life cycle characterized by both asexual and sexual reproduction phases. Overwintering occurs primarily in the egg stage on plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge, initiating a series of generations of wingless and winged females that can reproduce parthenogenetically at an exponential rate during the growing season.

Damage and economic impact: Aphids colonize the underside of leaves, sucking plant sap, which causes leaves to curl, yellow, and eventually wither. Heavy infestations stunt plant development, lead to poor head formation in cabbages, and ruin the marketability of the crop. Additionally, Lipaphis erysimi acts as a vector for various plant viruses, causing secondary damage that can be even more destructive than direct feeding.
