The booklouse (Liposcelis entomophila) is a member of the order Psocoptera and the family Liposcelididae. Despite the common name, these insects are not true lice but are small scavengers that frequently inhabit stored products, including warehouses, silos, and even domestic environments where moisture is present.
This pest primarily infests stored grains, flour, processed cereals, spices, and dried plant materials. They thrive in environments where organic dust accumulates and where humidity levels are high enough to support the growth of microscopic fungi, which serve as a supplemental food source for the population.
The life cycle of Liposcelis entomophila is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive rates. Under favorable conditions, particularly temperatures between 25°C and 30°C with high humidity, the insect progresses through several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. The ability to reproduce quickly allows for rapid infestation of grain stocks.
Damage caused by this species includes the direct consumption of the grain germ and endosperm, leading to weight loss and reduced germination capacity. Furthermore, the presence of large populations results in severe product contamination, as excreta and dead bodies accumulate within the commodity, rendering it unfit for consumption or processing.
