Liriomyza
Description
Leaf miners of the Liriomyza genus belong to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. These are dangerous polyphagous pests capable of causing significant damage in both open fields and greenhouse conditions. Adults are small yellow-and-black insects that cause damage to plants during both the adult and larval stages.
The pest affects a vast number of agricultural plant species. High-risk crops include tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans, lettuce, and ornamental flowers such as chrysanthemums and gerberas. The wide range of host plants makes Liriomyza one of the most challenging pests to control in crop rotation systems.
The biological life cycle of the fly includes the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female lays eggs directly into the leaf tissue by piercing the epidermis. The emerging larvae feed on the leaf parenchyma, creating characteristic winding tunnels known as mines. Under favorable temperature conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in just 15–20 days, allowing the population to multiply rapidly.
A characteristic sign of damage is the presence of whitish, winding lines on the leaf surface. High pest density leads to mass leaf senescence, which significantly reduces the plant's photosynthetic activity and leads to a loss of produce marketability. Furthermore, the damaged tissues often serve as entry points for pathogenic fungi and bacteria.
