Systematic position: The onion leaf miner (Liriomyza allia) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. It is a significant pest known for its specialized feeding behavior, which directly impacts the productivity and health of Allium species in various agricultural environments.

Host crops: This pest primarily targets plants within the Amaryllidaceae family. The most frequently affected crops include bulb onion (Allium cepa), garlic, leek, and shallot. Economic damage can be severe in areas where Allium production is concentrated, as the larvae target the foliage of these essential vegetable crops.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Liriomyza allia consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Female flies puncture leaf tissues to deposit eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae mine into the leaf tissue, creating distinctive tunnels. Depending on climate conditions, the insect can complete multiple generations per growing season, increasing the pressure on host plants.
