Liriomyza chinensis, commonly known as the onion leaf miner, is a member of the Agromyzidae family within the order Diptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets plants belonging to the Allium genus, causing severe damage in various cultivation systems.

The primary host crops susceptible to infestation include common onion, welsh onion, chives, and garlic. The damage is particularly devastating in areas where these crops are grown intensively, as the miner can easily complete multiple generations within a single growing season.

The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female creates small punctures on the leaves for both feeding and oviposition. The larvae emerge and tunnel through the mesophyll of the leaf, creating distinct, serpentine-like mines that are easily visible as the leaf tissue dies back.

The economic impact of this pest is substantial. Larval mining disrupts photosynthesis and nutrient translocation, leading to stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and increased susceptibility to secondary fungal infections. In severe cases, market value is lost entirely due to the aesthetic damage and reduced bulb size.
