Liriomyza commelinae

Liriomyza commelinae

Description

Liriomyza commelinae is a species of leaf-mining fly belonging to the family Agromyzidae within the order Diptera. As an agricultural pest, it is primarily recognized for its ability to infest plants in the Commelinaceae family, though its host range can expand within ornamental greenhouses and nursery environments, causing notable economic damage to greenhouse production.

The larvae of this pest are internal leaf feeders. Upon hatching from eggs inserted into the leaf tissue by the female fly, the larvae create winding galleries (mines) by consuming the spongy and palisade mesophyll. This feeding behavior destroys the structural integrity of the leaf and interrupts the photosynthetic process, eventually leading to chlorosis and leaf necrosis.

The life cycle of Liriomyza commelinae is highly temperature-dependent, often completed in just a few weeks under optimal warm conditions. The rapid maturation rate allows for multiple overlapping generations throughout a single season. The pupation phase typically occurs in the soil beneath the plant or within the leaf tissue, allowing the pest to survive and perpetuate infestations if not properly managed.

The damage is highly distinctive, appearing as pale, serpentine trails on the upper surface of leaves. Severe infestations result in massive leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant decrease in the marketability of ornamental plants. Furthermore, the punctures made by females for egg-laying and feeding can provide entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens.

  • Deployment of yellow sticky traps to monitor adult fly populations.
  • Rigorous sanitation by removing and destroying infested plant foliage.
  • Implementation of biological control agents, such as parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera).
  • Use of certified pathogen-free propagation material to prevent introduction.
  • Targeted application of systemic insecticides when necessary and in compliance with local regulations.
