The chrysanthemum leaf miner, scientifically known as Liriomyza insignis, is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. It is recognized as a major threat to both ornamental horticulture and various vegetable crops grown in greenhouse environments worldwide.

This pest primarily attacks plants within the Asteraceae family. Popular floral crops such as chrysanthemums, gerberas, and zinnias are highly susceptible. Due to its rapid reproductive rate and ability to survive in protected environments, the leaf miner can quickly spread across an entire greenhouse facility if left unmanaged.

The biology of Liriomyza insignis encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females oviposit directly into the plant tissue, usually the leaf mesophyll. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the parenchyma, creating complex, winding tunnels known as mines. The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple overlapping generations in warm climates.

The primary damage is caused by the larval feeding, which disrupts the plant's photosynthetic capacity. This leads to yellowing, necrosis, and premature abscission of leaves, which significantly impacts the aesthetic value of ornamental plants. Furthermore, the puncture wounds created by adult females during feeding can serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
