Four-spotted leafminer fly

Liriomyza quadrata belongs to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. Known commonly as a leafminer, this insect is a significant pest in agricultural settings. The larval stage is responsible for the damage, as they feed on the internal leaf tissue, effectively creating tunnels or mines that disrupt the plant's nutrient transport and photosynthetic capacity.

The pest has a wide range of host plants, including various vegetable, ornamental, and pulse crops. It is particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where the controlled climate allows for rapid population growth throughout the year, leading to severe economic losses if not monitored and managed properly.

The biological cycle of Liriomyza quadrata consists of the egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. The female adult uses its ovipositor to pierce the leaf surface and deposit eggs. Once hatched, the larvae immediately begin feeding on the mesophyll tissue, creating distinctive meandering patterns inside the leaves as they develop towards pupation.

Symptoms of infestation are easily recognizable by the serpentine trails on the leaves. In cases of high infestation, these mines can merge, leading to extensive tissue necrosis, leaf yellowing, and premature senescence. This loss of photosynthetic area severely hinders plant growth, resulting in reduced fruit size and lower overall crop yields.
