Green fruitworm

The green fruitworm (Lithophane antennata) is a member of the Noctuidae family and the order Lepidoptera. It is a well-known agricultural pest primarily affecting fruit orchards. Understanding its behavior is critical for growers to prevent significant economic losses caused by larval feeding on developing fruit and foliage.

This pest has a broad host range, feeding extensively on pome fruits such as apples and pears, as well as stone fruits including cherries, plums, and peaches. It is also capable of surviving on various forest trees, such as maple, oak, and willow, which act as reservoirs for population buildup near commercial orchards.

The life cycle typically consists of one generation per year. Adult moths overwinter and become active in early spring, laying eggs near buds or young leaves. Once the larvae hatch, they go through several instars, feeding voraciously on plant tissues. Pupation occurs in the soil, where the insects remain until the following spring, when the cycle begins anew.

Damage caused by the green fruitworm is particularly detrimental because the larvae feed directly on the developing fruit. They often chew deep, irregular cavities into young fruitlets, causing them to deform, scab over, or drop prematurely. The feeding damage significantly lowers the market value of the crop, making it unsuitable for fresh market sale.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs emphasize monitoring adult activity using pheromone traps. Biological controls, such as spraying Bacillus thuringiensis, are effective against young larvae. When populations exceed economic thresholds, growers may apply targeted insecticides, ensuring that applications are timed to minimize impact on beneficial predatory insects.
