Description
Systematic position: The rose-columbine aphid, scientifically known as Longicaudus trirhodus, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized aphid species that exhibits host-alternating behavior throughout the year.
Host plants: This aphid species primarily infests plants in the genus Rosa during the spring. As the season progresses, it migrates to its secondary host plants, which belong to the genus Thalictrum (meadow-rue), where it spends the summer months.
Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as eggs deposited on the stems of rose bushes. In spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices that establish colonies on the young leaves. During early summer, winged forms migrate to Thalictrum. By autumn, the aphids return to their primary hosts, the roses, to produce overwintering eggs.
Damage and pest status: By feeding on phloem sap, the aphids cause severe leaf curling, chlorosis, and stunted growth of shoots and flower buds. Their feeding activity also results in the secretion of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold, compromising both the health and aesthetic value of the ornamental plants.
