Sorghum aphid
Longiunguis
Description
Longiunguis is a genus of aphids belonging to the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as major agricultural pests, specifically targeting various cereal crops. They are particularly notorious for causing significant yield losses in sorghum and pearl millet, often appearing in massive colonies that can overwhelm plant defenses within a very short period.
The host range primarily includes cultivated sorghum and related wild grasses. Both nymphs and adults feed by extracting sap from the phloem, which causes systemic stress to the plant. This feeding behavior not only drains the plant of essential nutrients but also creates entry points for various pathogens, significantly reducing the vigor and developmental capacity of the affected crops.
The life cycle is characterized by rapid reproduction, often through parthenogenesis during the active growing season. Environmental factors, particularly temperature and humidity, play a crucial role in population dynamics. When conditions are favorable, the aphid population can double within a few days, necessitating precise and timely scouting to identify early infestations before they reach economic injury levels.
Damage symptoms include leaf curling, chlorosis (yellowing), and severe stunting. A secondary, yet equally damaging effect is the accumulation of honeydew on the foliage. This sticky substance serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis and negatively affects the overall metabolic activity of the plant, often leading to lodging or barren grain heads.
Control strategies should be integrated to ensure long-term sustainability. Cultural practices, such as choosing resistant varieties, implementing appropriate crop rotation, and eliminating alternative host weeds, are fundamental. When thresholds are exceeded, the application of systemic insecticides is often the most effective way to prevent widespread crop failure. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, can provide supplemental control.
- Regular field monitoring starting from the vegetative stage.
- Application of systemic insecticides when thresholds are met.
- Management of alternate hosts and wild grass borders.
