Lophopus

Lophopus (Latin: Lophopus) is a genus of freshwater bryozoans that can act as a technical pest in agricultural water systems. Belonging to the phylum Bryozoa, class Phylactolaemata, and family Lophopodidae, these colonial organisms are primarily found in aquatic environments, including hydroponic nutrient solutions, greenhouse irrigation systems, and ornamental fish ponds.

These organisms do not feed directly on plant tissue in the traditional sense, but they cause significant indirect damage to crops. By adhering to root zones, nutrient lines, and pump intakes, they restrict water flow and nutrient uptake. This results in growth retardation, wilting, and, in severe cases, the death of cultivated plants due to systemic failure of irrigation equipment.

The biology of Lophopus is centered on colonial growth. They reproduce primarily through budding, forming jelly-like masses that coat surfaces. During unfavorable conditions—such as a lack of water or extreme temperature fluctuations—they produce dormant structures called statoblasts. These statoblasts are highly resistant to environmental stressors and can survive in dried-out pipes or tanks for extended periods.

The harm caused by Lophopus is multifaceted. Firstly, they mechanically obstruct pipes, nozzles, and filters, leading to hydraulic imbalances. Secondly, the accumulation of organic material (the colonies themselves) creates a substrate for bacterial growth and root rot. Thirdly, they compete for dissolved oxygen in the water, which is essential for the healthy development of plant roots in hydroponic culture.

Control measures rely on a combination of sanitation and system design.
