Description
Lopidea cuneata is a species of plant bug belonging to the Miridae family, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as pests that feed on various herbaceous plants, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to plants within the Asteraceae family, such as rudbeckia and sunflower relatives.
The biology of this species is characterized by the overwintering of eggs within the stem tissues of host plants. Once temperatures rise in the spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately. They undergo several molting stages before reaching adulthood, during which they can be highly mobile across the host vegetation.
Feeding occurs through a piercing-sucking mouthpart, which extracts sap from leaves, stems, and flower buds. This activity results in the characteristic damage known as stippling or spotting, where individual cells are depleted of nutrients and die, leaving small yellow or necrotic lesions on the leaf surface.
The severity of the damage depends on the population density of the bugs. While light infestations may only be a nuisance to the plant's appearance, heavy infestations can lead to stunted growth, wilting of flower buds, and a general decline in the overall vigor of the plant, significantly impacting garden or field quality.
