Navajo plant bug

Lopidea navajo is a species of plant bug belonging to the family Miridae, which is categorized as a potential pest for various agricultural and ornamental crops. Systematically, this species is classified within the order Hemiptera. Unlike many other members of the family, this species displays specific dietary preferences, focusing on particular botanical families.

The primary crops attacked by this bug include members of the Solanaceae and Asteraceae families. The insect is most frequently found on various species of sage, wormwood, and may also migrate to vegetable crops grown near pest breeding hotspots, causing significant weakening of the vegetative mass.

The biology of Lopidea navajo is characterized by hemimetabolous development. The life cycle includes the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage (imago). Typically, they overwinter as eggs deposited within plant tissues or organic debris. In the spring, when favorable temperatures are reached, the larvae hatch and begin actively feeding on plant sap.

The damage caused by the insect involves piercing the epidermis of leaves and young shoots. Chlorotic spots form at the feeding sites, the tissues gradually die off, which leads to leaf deformation and a decrease in photosynthetic activity. At high population densities, the pest can cause premature shedding of flowers and fruits, severely impacting overall yield.

Protection strategies are based on field monitoring and an integrated pest management approach. Effective control measures include:
