Mediterranean recluse spider

The Mediterranean recluse spider (Loxosceles rufescens) is an arachnid belonging to the family Sicariidae. While it is not a direct plant pest, it is considered a significant nuisance in agricultural infrastructure, particularly within processing facilities, warehouses, greenhouses, and storage depots where harvested products are kept.

Biologically, the species is highly adapted to human-made structures. Adult spiders are relatively small, usually reaching up to 10 mm in length, and are easily identified by a violin-shaped mark on the cephalothorax. They are nocturnal predators that seek out dry, undisturbed environments, making them common inhabitants of storage areas filled with packing crates, bags of seeds, or agricultural machinery.

The development cycle of Loxosceles rufescens is relatively slow, with females depositing egg sacs in protected silk webs tucked away in dark corners. By feeding on various small insects found in storage facilities, they may occasionally help control minor insect pests, but their presence remains undesirable due to their potentially harmful nature toward humans handling the produce.

The main threat posed by this species is medical rather than agronomic. Their venom contains enzymes that can cause necrosis of human skin, known as loxoscelism. In an agricultural setting, this poses a serious risk to laborers who move boxes, stack pallets, or clean equipment, as the spiders are prone to hiding in these materials, leading to accidental bites when the spiders are compressed.

Effective management focuses on structural sanitation and environmental modification. Reducing clutter in warehouses, sealing structural gaps, and maintaining low humidity levels are essential steps to deter colonization. In cases of significant infestation, chemical control using targeted residual insecticides should be applied to corners, baseboards, and storage voids, always prioritizing the safety of the stored goods.
