Flounced Rustic

The Flounced Rustic (lat. Luperina testacea) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is recognized as a pest in agricultural settings, particularly known for the behavior of its larvae which feed on various grasses and cereal crops.

The larvae primarily target cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and rye. By living in the soil, they remain concealed while feeding on the roots and the base of the stems. This hidden lifestyle makes the pest difficult to detect until significant damage to the plant stand is already visible.

Regarding its biology, the species typically has one generation per year. The larvae overwinter in the soil at various depths. As temperatures rise in the spring, the larvae resume feeding on available vegetation. Pupation occurs in the soil, and the adult moths emerge in late summer, usually between July and September.

The damage caused by the Flounced Rustic is characterized by larvae severing the stems at the base or destroying the root system. This interrupts the nutrient supply to the plant, causing it to wilt and eventually die. High infestations lead to patchy fields and a marked reduction in overall yield density.
