Description
The Pear plant bug (lat. Lygocoris communis) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. Despite its name, it is a well-known threat to various fruit trees, causing noticeable aesthetic and physical damage to fruits and foliage in commercial and home orchards.
The pest primarily targets apple and pear trees, though it also thrives on hawthorn and various other Rosaceae species. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing plant tissues with their sucking mouthparts, extracting sap and injecting enzymes that disrupt normal growth and fruit development.
The life cycle begins with overwintering eggs deposited under the bark of young twigs. Nymphs emerge in the spring, typically coinciding with the bloom stage or shortly after. After passing through several instars, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs for the following season, completing a single generation per year.
Damage is most evident on the fruit. The feeding activity causes the skin to develop hard, corky spots, deep pits, and unsightly scarring as the fruit grows. This distortion severely reduces the market quality of the crop. Additionally, early-season feeding on tender leaves can cause chlorotic spotting and stunted terminal growth.
Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Pruning out infested terminal growth can reduce egg populations. When threshold levels are met, the application of targeted insecticides during the nymphal stage is crucial. Maintaining healthy orchard sanitation and monitoring for early signs of damage are essential for successful control.
