Green plant bug

The green plant bug (Lygocoris lucorum) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is a highly polyphagous pest that causes significant economic losses in agriculture worldwide. Known for its ability to infest a diverse range of host plants, it has become a critical subject for agricultural research and field management.

This pest attacks a vast array of crops, with a particular affinity for cotton, alfalfa, soybeans, and sunflowers. It also poses a threat to various fruit trees and vegetable crops. Its presence in agricultural landscapes is often associated with the proximity of wild host plants, which serve as reservoirs for the pest during the early stages of the growing season.

The biological cycle of Lygocoris lucorum comprises eggs, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The pest typically overwinters as eggs embedded in the tissues of plants or weeds. Depending on climatic conditions, the bug produces several generations per year. The high reproductive rate allows populations to explode rapidly, particularly during the flowering stage of the host crops.

The damage caused by the green plant bug is primarily due to its piercing-sucking mouthparts, which it uses to feed on plant juices. As it feeds, it injects toxic saliva into the plant tissues, leading to cell necrosis and physiological disruption. Key symptoms include
