Description
The apple capsid bug (Lygocoris rugicollis) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Miridae family. It is a common pest in temperate fruit orchards, known for its ability to cause significant cosmetic damage to fruit, thereby reducing the market value of the harvest.
The pest demonstrates a wide host range, primarily attacking pomaceous fruits such as apples, pears, and occasionally stone fruits like plums and cherries. It is also frequently found on various deciduous forest trees, including alder and willow, which can serve as sources of infestation for nearby orchards.
The life cycle of this insect consists of one generation per year. The overwintering stage is the egg, which is deposited within the bark of young shoots. As temperatures rise in spring, the nymphs hatch and immediately begin feeding on developing buds, foliage, and young fruitlets.
Damage is caused by the nymphs and adults piercing the plant tissue to extract sap. The affected leaves show signs of deformation and necrotic spotting. On the fruit, the feeding causes localized cessation of growth, leading to characteristic deep pits, pockmarks, and severe skin distortion, which renders the fruit unsightly.
Effective control measures require careful timing of insecticide applications, typically during the blossom and petal-fall stages. Integrated pest management strategies suggest monitoring populations through visual inspection or beating trays. Maintaining orchard hygiene and reducing weed cover can also help minimize the population pressure in the vicinity of susceptible trees.
