Northern tarnished plant bug

Systematic position: The Northern tarnished plant bug (Lygus borealis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. As a significant agricultural pest, it is known for its wide distribution across northern temperate regions, where it poses a constant threat to various herbaceous plants and field crops.

Host plants: This species is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of hosts. Among the most susceptible are alfalfa, red clover, various legumes, potatoes, and diverse vegetable crops. The bug is particularly damaging to seed production fields, as it specifically targets floral buds and developing seeds, significantly reducing yield and quality.

Biology and life cycle: The insect typically overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, field debris, or under the bark of trees. As temperatures rise in the spring, the adults emerge to feed on early weeds before migrating to crop fields. Females insert their eggs directly into the plant tissues. The nymphs go through several instars before maturing into adults, completing one or more generations annually depending on the local climate.

Nature of damage: Lygus borealis feeds by piercing plant tissues with its specialized mouthparts and injecting salivary enzymes. This process causes localized tissue death, stunted growth, flower abortion, and malformation of leaves and pods. In many cases, the damage caused by these bugs is more severe than the amount of sap consumed, due to the toxic effect of their saliva on plant physiology.

Control measures: Management of the Northern tarnished plant bug involves an integrated approach. Critical steps include the removal of weeds that serve as alternate hosts and the careful monitoring of crop fields during the early budding stages. When threshold levels are exceeded, chemical control with appropriate insecticides is required, though applications should be carefully timed to avoid harming pollinators and other beneficial predatory insects.
