Western tarnished plant bug

The Western tarnished plant bug (Lygus hesperus) is a member of the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. It is a highly significant agricultural pest recognized for its extensive range of host plants and its ability to cause severe economic losses in various commercial crops across North America.

Its life cycle consists of three primary stages: egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insect overwinter as adults in protected areas such as leaf litter or field debris. Emerging in spring, they begin to feed and reproduce, with multiple generations often occurring annually depending on local temperatures and seasonal availability of host plants.

This pest is highly polyphagous, targeting key agricultural commodities such as cotton, strawberries, alfalfa, and numerous vegetable crops. By utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts, both nymphs and adults extract sap from plant tissues, effectively draining the plant's nutritional resources and disrupting its vascular integrity.

Damage typically manifests as stunted growth, bud blast, and deformed fruit. When Lygus hesperus feeds, it injects salivary enzymes into the plant tissues, leading to cell death and tissue malformation. In cotton farming, this behavior often results in the shedding of squares (flower buds) and small bolls, leading to dramatic reductions in crop yield.
