Description

The genus Lypha belongs to the family Tachinidae, which are part of the order Diptera. Unlike most members of this family that function as parasitoids, the larvae of certain species may be associated with damage to specific woody plants or act as entomophages that regulate the population of other pests, so the status of the object requires clarification depending on the specific species.

These insects primarily affect deciduous trees and shrubs. In an agronomic context, they are often considered secondary pests or beneficial entomophages, whose activity directly depends on the presence of Lepidoptera caterpillars in orchards and shelterbelts. Damage is caused by larvae that may penetrate tissues or develop inside a host.

The biology of Lypha is characterized by a complex life cycle. The adults are flies that actively feed on the nectar of flowering plants. Females lay eggs directly on the body of the host (caterpillar) or on the substrate where the future victim lives. The larval stage goes through several instars, followed by pupation in the soil or leaf litter.

The nature of the damage depends on whether the species is parasitic or phytophagous. In a parasitic lifestyle, the damage to the target plant is indirect: larvae destroy leaf-eating pests, thereby providing a benefit. However, mass reproduction of certain species can lead to a decline in tree health due to damage to the foliage or stems.

To protect crops, a complex of measures is applied:

  • monitoring adult populations using pheromone traps;
  • maintaining biological balance in the garden to attract natural enemies;
  • in case of high density, applying systemic insecticides during the egg-laying period;
  • timely sanitary pruning of damaged branches.
