Description

Systematic position. Lyprauta cambria belongs to the order Diptera and the family Sciaridae, commonly known as fungus gnats. These small flies are often overlooked until their populations reach levels that cause significant damage to seedlings and ornamental crops.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets plants grown in high-moisture conditions. Vulnerable plants include vegetable seedlings, potted flowers, and various crops cultivated in greenhouse environments where organic-rich growing media provide an ideal breeding ground.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. While the adults are largely harmless, they are highly active in laying eggs. Larvae develop within the soil or substrate, feeding primarily on decaying organic matter, but they will readily attack living root systems and the stems of plants in wet conditions.

Damage patterns and economic impact. The primary injury is caused by the larvae, which feed on delicate root tissues, leading to poor growth, wilting, and potential plant death. Furthermore, these root wounds provide entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary infections and rot that can devastate an entire tray of seedlings.

Control measures. Effective management strategies include maintaining appropriate soil moisture levels to avoid waterlogging, utilizing sterile substrates, and deploying yellow sticky traps to capture adults. In cases of severe infestation, biological controls such as entomopathogenic nematodes or soil-applied insecticides can be utilized to reduce larval populations.
