Description

Important clarification: Lysiphlebus is not a plant pest. It is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the Braconidae family and is considered a highly beneficial entomophage. In agronomy, these insects are valued as a crucial tool for the biological control of various aphid species.

Systematically, Lysiphlebus belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Braconidae. These microscopic wasps specialize in locating aphid colonies, where they insert their eggs into the host's body. Their development occurs entirely inside the aphid, which leads to the eventual death of the pest.

The life cycle consists of several stages: egg, three larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The female wasp uses her ovipositor to deposit an egg into the aphid. The developing larva feeds on the aphid's internal tissues, eventually transforming the host into a characteristic "mummy"—a hollow, dried-out shell where the wasp pupates.

There is no damage to crops associated with these insects. On the contrary, Lysiphlebus is one of the most effective natural enemies of aphids affecting cereals, vegetables, and fruit trees. Its activity significantly reduces pest populations without the need for synthetic chemical insecticides.

To preserve Lysiphlebus populations in agricultural systems, it is essential to limit the use of broad-spectrum insecticides, especially during the wasp's peak activity periods. Implementing sustainable farming practices and planting nectar-rich flower strips as refugia supports the reproduction and survival of these beneficial wasps.
