Description
Important agronomical note: The genus Macrocentrus is not a plant pest. These insects are beneficial parasitoid wasps belonging to the family Braconidae. In modern agriculture, they are highly valued as essential biological control agents that target various lepidopteran pests, helping to protect diverse orchard and vegetable crops.
Taxonomically, they belong to the order Hymenoptera. These wasps are specialized in locating larvae of pests such as codling moths and leafrollers. Their anatomy, particularly the elongated ovipositor, allows them to reach larvae hidden deep within plant tissues or fruits, where many other natural enemies cannot penetrate.
The biological cycle is strictly parasitic. The female wasp searches for a suitable host, typically a caterpillar, and injects eggs into its body. To promote and protect Macrocentrus populations in agricultural systems, agronomists should implement the following measures:
- Reduce or eliminate the use of broad-spectrum insecticides that may kill beneficial parasitoids.
- Provide floral resources, such as nectar-producing plants, which are necessary for adult wasps to survive.
- Maintain hedgerows and unsprayed margins in fields to provide refuge and overwintering sites for these beneficial wasps.
